LAYOFFS LOOM FOLLOWING CITY COUNCIL V

The North Las Vegas City Council voted May 15 to cut about 200 police, firefighters and city staff jobs to fill a $33 million gap in its budget.

The measure came after the four unions representing public safety workers did not approve concessions to cover the shortfall. The city requested that the unions freeze annual raises for two years, eliminate "holiday sell-back" pay, lose uniform allowances and agree to operation efficiency changes.

Three unions either didn't approve the requests or couldn't reach a consensus. Teamsters Local 14 has told the city it is willing to negotiate.

The four revenue streams most affected by the budget gap are the city's general fund, the public safety tax fund, the SafeKey fund and the North Las Vegas Library District fund.

The underfunding, coupled with issues with collective bargaining with the unions, may lead to layoffs as soon as this week.
