Hillman fuels San Diego State to win over Air Force
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Ronnie Hillman had fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 22 and 57 yards, and San Diego State survived a series of trick plays figuring into two Air Force scores to pull away for a 41-27 victory Thursday night.
Hillman shook off a late fumble to finish with 172 yards on 27 carries, the sophomore running back's 11th 100-yard performance in 18 career games. That includes a 191-yard effort last year in a 27-25 home over Air Force.
Ryan Lindley threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, including a go-ahead 28-yard score to Colin Lockett late in the third quarter to help San Diego State (4-2, 1-1 Mountain West) bounce back from successive losses. The Aztecs are off to their best start since 1977, when they began the season 5-1.
Tim Jefferson had touchdown passes of 18 and 26 yards to Jonathan Warzeka for Air Force (3-3, 0-2).
■ Southern California 30, California 9 -- At San Francisco, Matt Barkley threw two touchdown passes, and the Trojans took advantage of five Golden Bears turnovers to win their eighth straight game in the series.
Marqise Lee and Brandon Carswell caught TD passes, but it was the defense that bailed out USC (5-1, 3-1 Pac-12) on a night its offense struggled to click.
After allowing 84 points and 946 yards over the previous two games, the Trojans kept Cal (3-3, 0-3) off the scoreboard until late in the third quarter and doubled their turnovers caused this season.
