Josh Reid named city attorney

The Henderson City Council voted 4-0 to hire Josh Reid, son of U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, as city attorney at a special meeting Nov. 29. Councilwoman Kathleen Vermillion abstained from the vote. Neither Reid nor interim city attorney Christine Guerci-Nyhus, the other finalist, was present at the meeting. 

Vermillion announces resignation

Councilwoman Kathleen Vermillion has announced that she plans to resign her council seat. Vermillion said she needed to spend more time with her children and her charity, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. 

Her resignation is effective Jan. 1. The City Council is expected to accept her resignation at today's regularly scheduled meeting.

Hopelink seeks holiday donations

HopeLink, 178 Westminster Way, is seeking toy donations for the holiday season before Monday. New, unwrapped toys may be dropped off at either T.J. Maxx, 280 N. Stephanie St., or at HopeLink. HopeLink is also requesting gift cards and movie passes as gifts for older children. Wrapping paper also is needed.

Dream Networking Event scheduled

The Dream Networking Event has been scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 S. Water St. The event is expected to benefit the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots. Guests are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and gently used or new coats. More than 70 vendors are expected to be at the event featuring product sales and services for holiday shopping.

BELIEVE CAMPAIGN RAISES MONEY
THROUGH LETTERS TO SANTA

Macy's has launched its Believe Campaign and encourages children to drop off their letters to Santa by Dec. 24 at any Macy's store. For every letter received, Macy's plans to donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Macy's said it will donate up to $1 million.

The Macy's Santa and the National Santa Tour bus are slated to visit Macy's at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, on Friday.

WORKSHOPS to offer advice
to NEW BUSINESSES

Henderson Libraries will help new businesses with a free workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway.

The "Grow Your Business Workshop" gives tips and techniques for marketing, prospecting, lead tracking and how to gain and retain customers.

The workshop will be presented by mysalestracker.com, a Henderson marketing business. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

CLASSIC MOVIE SERIES SHOWS FIRST FILM

The Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Road, is scheduled to present the first movie in a classic movie series. From 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 16, the library plans to show "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." The movie is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Snacks are slated to be provided.

SHOPPING DAYS GIVES PARENTS
A CHANCE TO SHOP without the kids

The city of Henderson is offering Shopping Days from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. The event allows parents to drop off their children for supervised fun and activities, leaving the adults free to go shopping. Children 5 to 12 are welcome to enjoy games and crafts for $20 per child. Registration is required one week in advance. For more information, visit cityofhenderson.com.

STAPLES OPENS NEW Henderson STORE

Staples opened a new store on Nov. 28 at 675 S. Green Valley Parkway. To celebrate the opening, Staples donated $15,000 to the Las Vegas Public Education Foundation. The store was expected to bring 20 full- and-part time jobs to Henderson.

COMPANY PARTNERS WITH SCHOOL
FOR ROBOTICS LESSON

Tronox LLC Electrolytic Products Division in celebrating its third year as financial partner for Robert Taylor Elementary School . The company provides assistance for the after-school robotics club offered for fourth- and fifth-grade students.

Healthsouth Rehabilitation to add
20 beds to jeffreys Street facility

HealthSouth Rehabilitation of Henderson announces the addition of 20 beds to its existing 70 beds at its location at 10301 Jeffreys St. The additional beds will provide patients with the option of a private or semi-private room.

HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Henderson is an acute medical rehabilitation hospital that offers comprehensive inpatient and home health rehabilitation services. The hospital recently has received awards for outstanding performance for clinical and home health programs and quality of patient care services.
