An early Wednesday morning crash left at least one person dead and another injured. The crash was reported just around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Swenson Street. At least two vehicles were involved in the crash, one of which caught fire. Debris was scattered across the intersection as police combed the area as they investigated the scene. Flamingo is blocked in both directions between Swenson and Cambridge Street. Northbound Swenson is blocked at the intersection.

A beefed-up baggage claim, food offerings and security check coordination helped McCarran International Airport take top honors in a closely watched 2018 airport study. McCarran tied for first with Orlando International Airport in in a J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study. McCarran is the busier of the two with 48.5 million passengers in 2017 compared with 44.6 million for Orlando, Florida’s busiest airport. McCarran has regular commercial air service from 39 carriers; Orlando has 40. In 2017, McCarran was ranked third among North America’s largest airports behind Orlando and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County International Airport.

Resorts World Las Vegas initially was supposed to open in 2016. But as time went on, construction seemed minimal, and the expected opening kept being delayed. It’s now set to open in 2020, and the project is showing visible progress. More than 1,000 construction workers are on site, with several thousand expected by 2019.
Martin Schiller’s research lab at UNLV is creating far more than just experiments. The research completed inside the Schiller Laboratory of Applied Bioinformatics has led to Schiller’s Heligenics, a startup that could help genetics testing companies shine a light on undiagnosed diseases. The company can work with genetic testing companies by analyzing all possible variations in a gene, which gives genetics testing companies more accurate results, said Schiller, founder and CEO. The Bend, a Las Vegas retail and office project near Ikea, is set to break ground this year. The 17.5-acre project would include a movie theater, eateries and other tenants, and a five-story office building. It would bring more construction to the southwest valley, perhaps the fastest-growing area of Las Vegas. Developers have been building houses, apartments, offices and other projects in the area.
Clark County auditors found that Henderson Constable Earl Mitchell requested $85,000 more in salary than he paid employees. The audit mirrors finding of a Las Vegas Review-Journal investigation. The paper questioned Mitchell writing himself checks … withdrawing money from ATMs and paying for travel with county funds. Auditors noted that many of the items purchased with county funds appear personal. Mitchell declined to discuss the findings.
