Casino operator Boyd Gaming Corp. has filed plans to build a new corporate campus. The plans call for two 10-story office buildings and a six-level parking garage in the southwest Las Vegas Valley. Boyd Gaming operates The Orleans, the Suncoast, downtown’s California Hotel and other properties. The new headquarters would be just a mile from its current main office building.
Zach Miles, associate vice president for economic development for UNLV, said there’s venture money in Southern Nevada, “but trying to find the right groups to tap into for that money is different.” According to a 2017 report from the Kauffman Foundation, Las Vegas ranked number 34 out of 40 metropolitan areas for growth entrepreneurship, a metric of how much startups grow. With a lack of growing startups in Las Vegas, investment money is being sent outside of state borders. The southwest region of the U.S. received $386 million in funding in the second quarter, with about $25.2 million in Nevada. The San Francisco area alone received about $5.6 billion. North Las Vegas police are investigating a Friday morning hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian. Police said an adult man was hit near a gas station on Las Vegas Boulevard North and was dragged a half-mile to where his body was found on an onramp to I-15 at Lake Mead Boulevard. Police are asking for the public’s help as they search for the vehicle. This is the 10th fatal crash of 2018 in North Las Vegas.
Grocery chain Haggen went bankrupt in 2015, but one former store in Las Vegas is still empty and boarded up. The store, in Boca Park, seems like a choice spot for retailers. It’s near affluent communities and a busy intersection. But big-box retail is on shakier footing, and there’s no shortage of competition nearby. “I don’t know specifically what the problem is. Las Vegas Lights FC made an interesting hire in coach José Luis Sanchez Solá, aka Chelís. Here are five fun facts about the coach. 1. Chelís is a childhood nickname, after a classmate played with his name “Jose Louis.” 2. He is the first person to coach in the first and second divisions of U.S. and Mexican soccer. 3. He claims to have never sat down during a match. 4. His Twitter account has 170,000 followers. 5. He says he had offers to coach in Central America and Saudi Arabia, but chose to come to Las Vegas.
Strip gunman Stephen Paddock owned a house in Mesquite, some 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. A probate case filed after the Oct. 1 mass shooting could set a sales process in motion. Some buyers may not care that the home was owned by a mass murderer, especially if it’s listed at a discount. But others might not want it, and at least one real estate agent says he wouldn’t want the listing.
