Legislators pursue new tax on business services in Nevada

With Nevada educators and some lawmakers seeking new revenue to fund public education, Democratic legislators have proposed a new 1 percent tax on a wide range of services, from hair salons to plumbing repairs, landscaping and diaper services. And, possibly, even brothels.

Senate panel looks at mining measures

CARSON CITY — A Senate committee on Friday passed a bill clarifying what mining companies are allowed to deduct from net proceeds taxes and offered amendments on another bill to clarify how the proposed margin tax on businesses would be calculated for the mining and casino industries.

Teacher tenure reform bills advance to Senate vote

Republicans gained ground in their battle to reform public education Friday, but not much. A proposal by GOP Gov. Brian Sandoval that teacher evaluations be based at least 50 percent on student achievement data was approved by the Senate Education Committee, as was a proposal requiring schools to set up performance pay programs for teachers by 2014.
