Every five years when UNLV fires its football coach there is a great whoop-de-doo and la-di-da about football. It usually lasts until the UNLV basketball team plays a quality nonconference opponent. Is there a program out there UNLV ought to be imitating?
The Detroit Lions are heading back to the postseason, clinching their second playoff berth in the last 14 seasons when Philadelphia lost to Washington on Saturday. Detroit plays at Chicago on Sunday. Also Saturday, San Diego beat San Francisco in overtime.
A turnaround play capped a turnaround season. Air Force force a Western Michigan fumble early in the fourth quarter in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday. Linebacker Dexter Walker grabbed the ball and scored, and the Falcons went on to beat the Broncos 38-24.
Utah leads the nation with 52 sacks, and end Nate Orchard has 17½ of them. Colorado State standout offensive left tackle Ty Sambrailo will try to keep Orchard away from Rams quarterback Garrett Grayson.
Utah scored 21 points in the first quarter — a Las Vegas Bowl record — and didn’t slow down much after that. The Utes ran over Colorado State, 45-10, on Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.
