Spiedini Italian Ristorante owner and Master Chef Gustav Mauler and his wife, Denise Mauler, are once again hosting the Spiedini Wine Event on Thursday to benefit Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. The fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. is an evening of fine wines, artisan cheeses and culinary delights, with all proceeds supporting Catholic Charities.
“We just want to make sure that the charity gets everything. Every person in need is taken in there,” the charming Master Chef Mauler said Monday night at Spiedini. “It is the most amazing place. Twenty percent of people don’t know where their next meal is coming from — it’s unbelievable. Meanwhile, we waste about 20 percent of food.
“It is the most heartwarming thing to see Catholic Charities feed more than 1,000 people a day and provide clothes and other services. This event also goes to Meals on Wheels, to seniors who can’t afford meals. We want to do something for people in need — this is absolutely for the needy people out there. We are so thrilled to be able to help them.”
Denise Mauler served on the Catholic Charities board for six years, and the fundraiser began a decade ago during the recession when people could afford an apartment but not food, Master Chef Mauler said. The event has been a great success every year, with a turnout of 200 to 300. “Southern Glazer’s and Michael Severino have always helped us.
“It’s a really wonderful event. The wines are great; last year, they were absolutely fantastic. We provide a large and varied assortment of food, from passing to grazing. It’s what we do, and it’s a great event.”
Master Chef Mauler’s Spiedini at J.W. Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa is a gem with its wonderful Italian menu and reasonable, off-the-Strip prices. It is no wonder that Spiedini has had success for nearly two decades. “We make everything fresh here, the pastas and sauces. It’s all homemade,” Master Chef Mauler said.
“We’ve been here 18 years, and the key is that the food has to be good. That’s the No. 1 thing. We pride ourselves on that; we care and love, and we care for and love people.
His impressive background includes opening The Mirage with Steve Wynn, with whom he worked for 20 years, and designing kitchens for The Mirage, Treasure Island and Bellagio. “I always work hard, but that’s part of the business, being there working with your staff and making sure that everything goes well,” he concluded.
An incredible dinner Monday night at Spiedini included meatballs, antipasto, crab cakes, Caprese salad, Cobb salad, osso buco + fettuccine, spinach + ricotta gnocchi and Cafe Italiano. Master Chef Mauler’s favorites include the halibut, salmon, lobster ravioli, chopped salad, veal dishes and homemade pastas and sauces.
The Spiedini Wine Event is sponsored by Spiedini; Larry Ruvo, Severino and Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits; Mutual of America; and Nevada Energy.
