LINDEMANS CUVEE RENEE (About $4-$6 each 11.2-oz. bottle) An ancient beer style, Gueuze (French) or Geuze (Dutch) is wild-fermented wheat beer made with only aged hops in small quantities. Because Gueuze is fermented by multiple strains of yeast, it is a testimony and tribute to the yeast strains of Senne River Valley. The brewers blend aged lambic and younger lambic to taste, and refermentation occurs in the bottle after capping. Lindemans Cuvee Rene is authentic “Oude Geuze,” every batch blended by hand. Taste: Glowing golden color, cider-y, wine-y palate; reminiscent of bubbly dry vermouth but with a more complex and natural flavor. It’s very dry, appetizing and energizing. Cuvee Rene has been imported here since the early 1990s, a time when the sour beer category didn’t exist.
NORTH COAST BERLINER WEISSE (About $6-$8 each 22-oz. bottle) Influential British beer author and journalist the late Michael Jackson, not the pop singer, describes “Berlin White Beer” as having an “insistent sparkle, a fragrant fruitiness in the nose, a sharp, dry palate and a frisson of quenching, sour acidity in the finish.” North Coast Brewing’s Passion Fruit-Peach Berliner Weisse is made with the juice of peaches from California and passion fruit from Ecuador, a Pan-American take on the German classic. This very limited release is available as 22-oz.bottles, as well as in 1/6 barrel kegs.
VICTORY KIRSCH GOSE (About $9-$11 in 12-oz. six packs) Excite your senses with a sharp, sweet burst of cherries. Sublime and effervescent, this bold and bright session ale has an enticing cherryfruit character. Flavor: Pours a ruby to light red with white foam. Aroma of fresh sour cherries with flavors of tartness, intense rounded cherry character and a refreshing salty character. Crisp carbonation and light body are combined into a thirst quencher.
