September is Hunger Action Month, and Three Square Food Bank is working to raise awareness with events and activities this month. Chef Robert Irvine, pro BMX rider Ricardo Laguna, The Las Vegas 51s and more have joined Three Square in the fight against hunger encouraging the community to “Fill the Plate.”
“Fill the Plate” (Sept. 1-30)
Las Vegas works together with local businesses to help fill the “plate,” a 30’-by-30’ graphic in Three Square’s south warehouse, with nonperishable food items. Three Square welcomes shelf-stable donations Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and contributions to the virtual food drive beginning Sept. 1 at ThreeSquare.org/ham.
Individuals, businesses and organizations can help by snapping social media photos using #FillthePlate. Supporters include Irvine, Laguna, 51s team mascot Cosmo, UNLV Pom team, Jarrett & Raja, “Marriage Can Be Murder,” Piff the Magic Dragon, “Magic Mike Live,” Melody Sweets of “Absinthe,” Murray Sawchuck and DJ Ben Harris, Terry Fator’s opening act.
SNAP Experience (Sept. 14-21)
Approximately 440,000 Nevadans rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, formerly food stamps. Kicking off on Hunger Action Day (Sept. 14) for one week, SNAP Experience participants will spend no more than $4 per day on food or $28 per week, declining items that are not available to individuals dependent on SNAP such as free meals, prepared foods, alcohol and fast food. Executive Volunteer Days (Sept. 19-20)
Three Square executives, including President & CEO Brian Burton, COO Larry Scott, CDO Michelle Beck and CFO Tifani Walker, host a volunteer session and ice cream social at 5 p.m. Sept. 19 and 9 a.m. Sept. 20. Volunteers will pack meals or produce that will go to food-insecure individuals and families before enjoying orange creamsicles. Contact: Kate Hibbard at (702) 644-3663 Ext. 325 and email@example.com.
KOMP Radiothon (Sept. 29)
On Sept. 29, to close out Hunger Action Month and “Fill the Plate,” KOMP 92.3 The Rock Station will broadcast live from Three Square from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. The radiothon will feature Three Square staff, donors and volunteers and surprise guests.
One in 7 Southern Nevadans struggles with hunger — more than 296,000 people in the community are food insecure, including more than 117,000 children. Three Square raises awareness for the hunger epidemic and encourages Las Vegas to take action.
