Research has shown that viscosupplementation helps to decrease inflammation in the knees due to loss of cartilage ultimately leading to repair and regenerate tissue loss within the knee joint.
Viscosupplementation is synthetic hyaluronic acid normally present in the knee as a component of cartilage. However, over time degeneration of this cartilage can cause osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid supplementation adds lubrication and cushion within the joint space, helping with pain relief, improved function and reduced stiffness.
“Our goals are to reduce arthritis knee pain, protect the cartilage, and give our patients better days on their own natural knees as best, and as long, as we can, hopefully, for life. Both hyaluronic acid injections and PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections accomplish this individually and, better yet, in combination,” said Dr. Lary Korn, treating physician and CEO of the clinics in Nevada.
Vitality Healthcare, located both in Reno and Las Vegas offers a safe, caring environment with certified and highly trained staff.
Jennifer D’Andrea, APRN located in Las Vegas, is board certified in family medicine and has been practicing regenerative medicine for more than five years. She has extensive joint injection experience using ultrasound guidance. She has been with Vitality Healthcare since 2019.
Dr. Lary Korn, located at the Reno location, previously with the United States Airforce, specializes in anti-aging and regenerative medicine. He has been with Vitality Healthcare in Reno since 2020. “Surgery should be the last resort,” he said.
It has been established that approximately 70 percent of people over the age of 65 have x-ray evidence of osteoarthritis, although not all experience symptoms.
Dr. Korn said that both clinics have helped over 1,000 patients aged 40-100, and about 85 percent have reported relief from joint pain.
It is common that the majority of patients report feeling pain relief after the second injection, around the second or third week of therapy.
Each patient experiences varying pain relief with benefits lasting from six months to two years. At this time, Medicare covers the treatment every six months.
“Although not curable, viscosupplementation mimics a naturally occurring lubricant located in a healthy knee that promotes smoother joint movement, reduces friction in the joint, and slows the progression of osteoarthritis.” said Jennifer D’Andrea, APRN-BC.
