Henderson’s Skyline Casino to add more hotel rooms, pool
Skyline Casino, a quintessential old-school locals hangout in Henderson, plans to invest another $7 million to nearly double the size of its newly opened hotel.
Skyline will build another structure to add 41 rooms, taking the total to 92, said Assistant General Manager Grant Givens. The hotel will also add a pool and other amenities, he said. Construction is slated to start in the first quarter and finish by the end of 2018.
The casino sees significant room demand potentially coming from Union Village, a massive $1.2 billion health community located just two miles away, as well as Cadence, a master-planned community of 13,000 homes.
“The area is really booming in construction,” said Givens, adding Skyline first considered building a hotel before the national economy imploded in 2008, ravaging Las Vegas. The company waited for signs the economy was rebounding before investing $9 million into the hotel, which opened in June.
Union Village
Henderson Hospital, a 142-room medical facility, opened last year at Union Village. Current plans call for 1,000 apartments, a 40-bed acute care hospital, 140-bed nursing facility and 300-unit senior living community. Skyline is on the hospital’s list of nearby accommodation.
Relatives and friends seeking to visit loved ones either at the medical facilities or Cadence may seek to stay at a hotel nearby, said Givens. Union Village is already generating some business for the hotel. People working on the construction of the medical facilities occasionally stay at the Skyline, Givens said.
Rising Strip hotel prices may be pushing others to choose the far-out location, he said. Skyline gets nearly 70 percent of its guests through travel website Booking.com, said General Manager Sam Kiki.
The hotel has averaged about 60 percent occupancy from its June opening through November, Givens said. Some of the guests do visit the casino, which has helped drive a 31 percent increase in gaming, food and beverage revenue so far this year, he said.
The 65-year old Skyline is owned by Jim Marsh, who has made a small fortune in Las Vegas running several car dealerships. Marsh also owns a casino in Amargosa.

The sound of coins
Skyline is best known for its coin-operated machines. While some casinos have a few for nostalgia, nearly 90 of the 300 slots accept coins at the Skyline. The sound of quarters landing into plastic cups can be heard all day inside the casino.
