County advances plan for action-packed theme park near Sloan

Plans for a new theme park where thrill-seekers can zip through the air, over land and across water received Clark County support Wednesday.

The 16-acre Sloan theme park, tentatively called XPark Vegas, is planned to be built within the next year just west of Interstate 15.

The proposed adult playground will feature bungee jumping, an ATV and dirt bike obstacle course, a shooting range, speedboat channels and a construction equipment area.

County commissioners voted 7-0 in favor of the project, with some conditions:

■ The operators must conduct a review once the project has been open for a year.

■ A third party must conduct inspections of facilities.

■ An ambulance will be on-site when the park is open.

Also required is a plan for the property if the project doesn’t come to fruition.

“If they start and don’t finish, they have to put the land back to its original look,” said Commissioner Susan Brager, who represents the area.

Machine Guns Vegas owner Genghis Cohen is proposing the park, which is expected to cost $25 million to $30 million to develop.

An earlier county staff report noted some concerns about the project’s requested waivers on county development standards for landscaping, reduced parking, increased height and off-site improvements such as sidewalks and streetlights, and the compatibility with land-use planning and development in the area, as well as safety and accident response concerns.

Despite concerns and the conditions on the project, Brager called the project approval “pretty smooth” later Wednesday.

Some parts of the park are expected to be open by summer 2017.
