Security company selected for proving ground

Federal officials have picked a successor to a firm that used to have the job to again provide security at the vast national nuclear proving ground in Nevada.

The National Nuclear Security Administration announced Thursday that G4S Government Solutions Inc. was awarded the nearly $234 million contract for services at the Energy Department's Nevada National Security Site north of Las Vegas and at NNSA Nevada Site Office facilities in North Las Vegas and Nellis Air Force Base.

The company used to be Wackenhut Services Inc. The contract runs for three years, plus two one-year options.

Beginning Jan. 1, G4S will be responsible for patrols and protection of facilities and nuclear materials associated with national stockpile experiments and safety training.

The site was formerly known as the Nevada Test Site.
