State’s initial jobless claims inch up in November

CARSON CITY - The number of Nevadans filing initial claims for jobless benefits in November was up slightly compared with the same time last year.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says Thursday that 21,260 initial claims were filed last month, compared with 21,086 in November 2011.

The gain was less than 1 percent, but it's the second month in a row that the number of claims has risen year-over-year.

State economist Bill Anderson says the new numbers might indicate the end of a long downward trend in initial claims that started in 2009.

Initial claims are still well below their peak of more than 34,000 in December 2008.

Nevada has had the nation's highest jobless rate since May 2010.
