The Clark County coroner’s office has identified the man who killed himself early Saturday after a standoff with Las Vegas police as William Thornton, 74, of Las Vegas.
Police went to Thornton’s house, on Furnace Gulch Avenue near Fort Apache Road and Blue Diamond Road, after he fired a round at his wife at about 7:30 a.m. Watch commander Lt. Craig Klatt said the man was depressed and had been drinking.
Responding officers tried to talk to Thornton on the phone, but he hung up and shot himself while a SWAT crew was en route.
The coroner ruled his death a suicide from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
