The Clark County coroner has identified the man killed in a shooting in northeast Las Vegas on Thursday night as Exavian Jones, 24, of Las Vegas.
Jones and a woman were shot about
9:30 p.m. inside an apartment on the 9600 block of Hopkins Drive, near Hollywood Boulevard and East Carey Avenue. Jones was taken to University Medical Center, where he died of a gunshot wound to the chest. The coroner has ruled the death a homicide.
The woman suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police spokesman Jose Hernandez said.
Homicide Lt. Ray Steiber told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Friday that police believe some kind of dispute preceded the shooting.
A neighbor, who asked not to be named, said Jones had been shooting cans with a BB gun in his backyard when a group of about eight “gangsters” came up and started arguing with him.
She said Jones told them to go away and then went inside his house. Soon after, the group returned and stormed inside the house. The neighbor said she heard shots fired and then saw the people pile into a green SUV and flee.
Steiber said police had no evidence to suggest the shooting was gang-related. He did not have enough details to provide a clear description of the suspects.
