Man involved in Henderson police shooting held on five felony charges

A man who was shot by Henderson police after he pointed a gun at officers was being held Tuesday on five felony charges as he recovers at a hospital.

According to records, Tony Allen McNeill, 53, was booked in absentia at Henderson Detention Center on three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of discharging a firearm into a structure.

He was being held on a $35,000 bond.

McNeill was shot in the arm Monday by Henderson police and was recovering at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, police said.

Officials at Sunrise declined to release information on his condition, citing patient confidentiality.

McNeill’s first court appearance was scheduled for today. It was unclear whether he would attend because of his injuries.

Henderson police responded to the Country Hills condominium complex, near Boulder Highway and Racetrack Road, about 2 p.m. Monday after a woman called 911. The woman, later identified as Charlene McNeill, told authorities her son had a rifle and had threatened to kill himself, police said.

When officers arrived, Tony McNeill came out of the home wielding a rifle, police said.

Officers asked him repeatedly to drop the weapon, but McNeill aimed the rifle at officers instead, police said.

Three officers fired. It was unclear whether McNeill fired.

The family had fallen on hard times, neighbors said.

McNeill had been a maintenance man at the complex but had to give up the job because of health problems that required him to use a cane.

Two years ago around Christmas, the McNeills’ condo almost burned down from a fire in the upstairs condo. Records show that McNeill’s parents, Robert and Charlene McNeill, filed for bankruptcy in August.

The names of the officers involved will be released 48 hours from the time of the incident per department policy. The officers will be placed on routine paid administrative leave during the investigation of the incident.
