Man wanted for impersonating cop turns himself in

A former police officer for New York City and Henderson turned himself in to authorities Wednesday on a misdemeanor warrant for impersonating an officer, Henderson police said Thursday.

Police spokesman Keith Paul said Adam Brooks was booked into the Henderson Detention Center. Brooks was not listed on the jail’s website Thursday afternoon.

According to a warrant report, Brooks on two different occasions said he was either a working officer or a retired officer.

In a March traffic stop, Brooks told Henderson police he was a retired Henderson officer and flashed a badge.

According to the report, on Oct. 11, Brooks went to a McDonald’s at 310 N. Boulder Highway. He was looking for a female employee because her boyfriend had a warrant out for his arrest, said the report, which described Brooks as a bail agent.

On that day, Brooks spoke with an area manager on the phone who was not at the store. The area manager said Brooks identified himself as a Henderson police officer. Brooks told the area manager that if he didn’t cooperate, he would be obstructing justice, the report said. The manager’s story was corroborated by other witness accounts, according to the report.

A second manager, who also spoke on the phone with Brooks, said Brooks implied he was an officer, although he didn’t say it directly.

"He did make statements that he was an ‘officer cooperating with police,’ " the report said.

On March 3, Brooks was pulled over by Henderson police. During the stop, the badge Brooks showed police was not an authentic, department-issued badge for retirees. Brooks should not have been in possession of the badge, according to the report.

The report added that Brooks was an officer with the New York City Police Department from 1995 to 1999. He also worked as an officer in Henderson from 1999 until he resigned in May 2008. The report did not specify why Brooks resigned.
