Suspect arrested in fatal March shooting

A 20-year-old man was arrested Sunday in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this year, Las Vegas police said.

Akeem Tripp shot Phillip Hooks multiple times at an apartment complex at 5250 E. Stewart Ave., near Nellis Boulevard, on March 4, according to his arrest report obtained Monday.

Hooks died from his wounds at University Medical Center on April 7. Tripp was interviewed by police on Oct. 19. He denied shooting Hooks.

But that same day, detectives spoke with one of Tripp's neighbors who said Tripp confessed to shooting his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend. Tripp and Hooks had dated the same woman, the report said.

The report said Tripp then told the neighbor where his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend lived and how many times he had shot him.

The shooting followed an encounter the two had at the apartment complex. Tripp told the neighbor that his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend was too big to fight, so he shot him, the report said.
