Suspect arrested after deadly shooting near downtown Las Vegas

Updated September 15, 2017 - 11:01 am

Las Vegas police have a suspect in custody after a man was shot and killed Thursday night north of downtown Las Vegas.

Michael McNair, 30, was arrested Friday on a first-degree murder charge. He is being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bail.

About 9:30 p.m. Thursday, responding officers found a man in his late 30s from California suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in front of a business on the 1200 block of Las Vegas Boulevard North, between Washington and Owens avenues. He died at University Medical Center.

Surveillance video from a business did not capture the shooting, Metropolitan Police Department homicide Lt. Dan McGrath said, but shows two men exiting a black pickup truck before arguing with the man. Homicide detectives later identified McNair as a suspect.

McGrath said two men returned to the truck to grab something before firing five to six shots.

There were multiple witnesses at the scene, including employees at the business. All were cooperating with detectives, McGrath said.

He said a third person appeared to be involved in the altercation. Surveillance video showed the person getting out of a white SUV, similar to a Chevrolet Suburban, and speaking to the two men from the pickup truck.

A motorcycle officer heading to the shooting scene was injured in a crash, Lt. Peter Kisfalvi said. The officer was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

The man who was killed will be identified by the county coroner’s office once his family has been notified. His death marks the 135th homicide in Clark County and the 113th investigated by Metro this year.
