Man killed in Summerlin restaurant had role in girl’s 2009 shooting death

A man shot to death last week in a Summerlin restaurant previously served time in prison for his role in the 2009 shooting death of a 9-year-old girl in North Las Vegas, according to police and court records.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified the man as Marcus Larry, 39.

Las Vegas police said Larry was in the Teriyaki Madness restaurant at 10300 W. Charleston Blvd., near Town Center Drive, when a gunman walked in and opened fire at 7:49 p.m. on Nov. 23.

Larry died at the scene. An employee at the business, a 48-year-old woman, was struck by gunfire but survived.

Police confirmed that Larry is the same man who pleaded guilty in 2013 to conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder in the June 12, 2009, death of 9-year-old Savannah Bullins.

A co-defendant, Kenneth Reid, now 33, entered an identical plea. Both men entered the type of guilty plea that required them to admit only that prosecutors could prove their case.

North Las Vegas police said Savannah was shot as she played with her younger sister at a two-story apartment complex at 2112 Sun Ave., near Civic Center Drive and Cheyenne Avenue. At least nine shots were fired. Police said one of the bullets went through a balcony wall and hit the girl.

Police said at the time that they believed Savannah’s father, Will, was the intended target, though he denied it.

A criminal complaint contended that Larry and Reid were associated with the gang the Hoodsmen Bloods.

The men went to trial in 2012, but a jury deadlocked on their fates, leading a judge to declare a mistrial. The plea deal followed, with both men receiving sentences of seven to 20 years in prison. They also received credit for the more than four years they already had served behind bars.

Larry’s sentence expired on Sept. 7, 2020, according to state records. Reid also was released from prison after serving his sentence.

Will Bullins said in a brief phone interview Tuesday evening that he recently learned of Larry’s death.

“I have a lot of mixed emotions,” Bullins said, adding that he was praying for the man’s loved ones.

Las Vegas police have released little information on the Summerlin homicide investigation. Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said Tuesday the investigation is ongoing, but he did not provide further details.

The coroner’s office said Larry died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death has been deemed a homicide. The coroner’s office was unable to identify a place of residence for Larry.

Police said the gunman who killed him was a thin man wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap who fled the area immediately after the shooting. Police previously said Larry was 40, but the coroner’s office said on Tuesday that he was 39.
