Northwest Las Vegas homicides submitted for self-defense review, police say

Updated March 19, 2025 - 2:32 pm

The preliminary investigation of a homicide that happened in the northwest valley Tuesday night suggested self-defense, according to police.

The Metropolitan Police Department received a call around 9:22 p.m. regarding a domestic disturbance in the 3300 block of Cheltenham Street. The neighborhood is north of Cheyenne Avenue and west of the Durango Hills Golf Club.

When officers went inside the home, they found a person suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said. Medical pronounced the person, identified by the Clark County Coroner’s office as 30-year-old Julius Rodgers, dead on the scene, and homicide detectives took over the investigation.

“After completing the preliminary investigation, the incident will be submitted to the DA’s office for self-defense review,” public information officer Bob Wicks told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in an email.

Wicks also said that another homicide that happened this week — also in northwest Las Vegas but in the 7700 block of North Durango Drive about six miles away — will also be submitted to the District Attorney’s office for self-defense review. The coroner identified Che Couyette, 52, as the deceased in that event.
