Man arrested on arson charge after fire in Las Vegas home

A 25-year-old arson suspect was arrested Saturday after firefighters were called to a northwest Las Vegas Valley home for a medical response.

Duane Smith is being held on $20,000 bail at the Clark County Detention Center. He faces one felony count of first-degree arson.

The Las Vegas Fire Department responded about 11:35 a.m. Saturday to a home on the 7600 block of Woven Sands Street, near North Durango Drive and U.S. Highway 95, for a medical response. According to the Fire Department, arriving firefighters instead found what appeared to be a fire intentionally set inside the home.

Smith, who was inside the home when crews arrived, was taken into custody after arson investigators interviewed him, the department said in a statement.

The Metropolitan Police Department was also called just after 11:30 a.m. Saturday for reports of a fire on the same block, Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield said. Police call logs show that Metro patrol officers were called to the same address two separate times the day before Smith’s arrest. Details about the calls for service on Friday weren’t immediately clear.

No one was injured in the fire; the Fire Department is investigating the incident.
