Nevada cops: Knife-wielding boy on campus had cut classmate

RENO — Reno police say a knife-wielding 14-year-old shot by a campus police officer two weeks ago cut a classmate, then chased him through a crowd and advanced toward the officer before the shooting in a high school courtyard.

Reno police say they have interviewed more than 100 witnesses as the lead agency in a regional investigation into the Dec. 7 officer-involved shooting.

The department said in a statement Wednesday that many details of the investigation have been corroborated by cellphone videos shot by Hug High School students.

The teen shot once in the chest by a Washoe County School District officer last was reported in critical but stable condition at a Reno hospital.

His lawyer, David Houston, said he’d been beaten and bullied before. Houston says the boy brought kitchen knives from home to defend himself against another attack.
