Henderson man shoots, kills son, police say

Updated November 2, 2017 - 10:04 pm

A 53-year-old man was arrested Thursday after police said he shot and killed his son in Henderson.

Police initially responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 900 block of Seven Hills Drive about noon, Henderson Police Department spokesman Rod Peña said.

Peña said detectives determined Wendell Melton, 53, shot his juvenile son, who was taken to St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus. The boy was initially in critical condition but he later died, police said.

Peña said Henderson police arrested Melton on Thursday afternoon. Melton, who faces charges of murder, child abuse and possession of a gun by a prohibited person, was jailed in the Henderson Detention Center.

The Clark County coroner’s office will identify Melton’s son.

This marks the eighth homicide in Henderson police’s jurisdiction this year.
