Utah authorities arrested a suspect and accused him of several felonies after a Utah police dog was shot and airlifted to Las Vegas for treatment.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office announced Alvie Jared Grover, 55, of St. George, Utah, was arrested Friday in connection with the shooting. He faces multiple counts, including aggravated robbery, motor vehicle theft, firearm theft and injuring or interfering with a police service animal. His bail was set at $100,000.
The Sheriff’s Office announcement said Grover was served with a warrant at the hospital where he is being treated.
A Sheriff’s Office canine named Tess was shot in the jaw in Santa Clara, Utah, after a carjacking incident Tuesday night, the St. George News reported. A helicopter carried Tess to a Las Vegas emergency veterinary clinic Wednesday morning.
The person who shot Tess was also shot by police, according to the news report.
A release from the Sheriff’s Office noted the veterinarian indicated Tess was likely shot two times while trying to apprehend the carjacking suspect.
Tess is expected to make a full recovery.
