Disney introduces channel’s first lesbian couple

A same-sex couple made an appearance on a Disney Channel show for the first time on Sunday.

In an episode of “Good Luck Charlie,” Charlie’s parents invite Taylor, her friend from preschool, over for a playdate. They argue over the name of Taylor’s mom before eventually realizing they are both right, because “Taylor has two moms.”

Disney announced the development of the episode in June in an exclusive interview with TV Guide, where a spokesperson said the storyline was created with the help of child development experts and community advisers.

“It was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness,” the spokesperson said.

Among those to speak out in support of the episode was former Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus, while the conservative group One Million Moms condemned the episode at the time of the announcement.

“This is the last place a parent would expect their children to be confronted with topics that are too difficult for them to understand,” organizers wrote at the time, according to the Huffington Post. “Mature issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon, and it is extremely unnecessary.”
