DJ Keith Evan says his craft is an art form

For the past decade, he has been an institution in the Vegas deep house scene. DJ Keith Evan has moved enough bodies to rival the regional transit authority. Read on, as Evan breaks down the art of DJing.

What does Keith Evan sound like?

"Imagine a sound that grabs a hold of you, shakes the crap out of you, makes love to you like never before and then after the climax, makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside until your soul has no choice but to surrender."

A lot of people don’t really understand what it means to be a DJ. They think you just spin records.

"First of all, DJing is a very sacred place to be, and if you’re privileged enough to be one, then understand there is a lot more to it than just spinning. We have a responsibility to make people feel emotions that allow them to dance, sing, laugh and cry. We need to be able to translate the new with the old. We need to be educating as well as bringing you back to the past. As a DJ, you represent many artists who’ve made the music you play. You represent a culture. A true DJ is an artist, one who can create and re-create through music. A true DJ collects music, buys music, studies music, supports other DJs. A DJ is a night owl who spends tireless hours in nightclubs, outdoor events, undergrounds, house parties. A DJ is a self-promoter on a mission to preach his or her word. Mama, don’t let your baby grow up to be a DJ."

You helped develop the Las Vegas House Society and the weekly Soundbar events at ghostbar at the Palms. How have both evolved over the years?

"Briefly, we’ve pioneered the deep house movement in Las Vegas. We’ve taken Soundbar from a small local gathering to an international household name brand in the deep house community. We have hosted a plethora of highly accomplished DJs/producers and we continue to break top artists within our genre. Our event continues to grow in numbers every year. We’ve taken the House Society brand outside Las Vegas, as well, where we’ve produced events in Mexico, Miami and Detroit over the past five years. Soundbar is approaching its ninth year anniversary and we’re still growing."

If the crowd’s seeming a little lethargic, what do you turn to for a can’t miss energy boost these days?

"Lately, there’s a song that seems to be a remedy for this: "La Mezcla" (the original) by Michael Cleis. Otherwise, I start throwing a hissy fit until they get the picture — just kidding."

On the flipside, what’s to be avoided at all costs? What’s death on the dance floor?

"I really try to avoid playing gigs where I might get a Tiesto or a Britney Spears request, but being that I live in Las Vegas, that’s sometimes hard to avoid. Also, playing on a bad sound system — a bad sound system and our deep house sound have a real bad relationship."

See DJ Keith Evan at 11 p.m. Tuesday at Moon Nightclub at the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road. Cover is $20, and free for locals; call 942-7777.
