The joys of challah

It’s fun to say (if you try to do it correctly), even more fun to eat, because it’s rich and eggy and always brings so much to the party, no matter how you use it. And fellow Taste of the Town readers have found it locally for Jean Friss, who’s looking for a source, preferably close to Henderson.

Richard Markus, Caron Borgeson, Valerie Weinberg and Carole McGilton recommended Weiss Restaurant, Deli &Bakery at 2744 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson (McGilton noted Weiss also serves challah French toast). Borgeson and Kristine Segura also suggested Great Harvest Bread Co., which Segura said sells it on Fridays (she suggested calling ahead to ensure it’s available); there are Great Harvests at 661 Marks St. and 2520 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, both in Henderson, and at 10180 W. Tropicana Ave. Borgeson also suggested Sprouts Farmers Market at 515 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson; there are four other Sprouts stores in the valley.

Sue Coffey said she’s seen challah on Fridays at Einstein Bros. Bagels at 4415 W. Flamingo Road, and that the store has challah bagels daily; there are 18 other Einstein Bros. in the valley. Ann Brown and Gloria Castricone (who said she loves challah toasted) recommended Great Buns Bakery at 3270 E. Tropicana Ave. Blake Myers recommended Freed’s Bakery at 9815 S. Eastern Ave. And Kara Hierro of Glazier’s Food Marketplace at 8525 W. Warm Springs Road emailed that they bake it in the store, and added, “we’re about 15 to 20 minutes away from the Henderson area on the 215.” …

For Roberta Shulman, who’s looking for thinly sliced raw veal cutlets, or scallopini, Andrea Drasner emailed that she gets them cut to order at The Butcher Block at 6440 N. Durango Drive; there’s another location at 7625 S. Rainbow Blvd. And Hierro said Glazier’s carries those too, sliced in-store. …

For Betty Smith, who’s looking for XLNT tamales, Dave Reynard and Colleen Sams spotted them at Albertsons, and Robert Keith and Al Klein found them at Smart &Final. …

More on huckleberry ice cream: Reggie Weeks reported spotting Tillamook brand at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 4505 W. Charleston Blvd.

Coffey is looking for boysenberry syrup, now that Knott’s Berry Farm has discontinued its syrups. …

Mark Cole is looking for Beaver brand tartar sauce, which he used to get at Albertsons. …

Ellen Garland is looking for Crosse &Blackwell date and nut loaf in a can, and Cape Cod Potato Chips, 40 percent reduced fat. …

Barbara Mader is looking for a local source for fresh (not previously frozen) chicken livers that she can prepare at home. …

Evelyn Austin is looking for Del Monte no-sugar-added grapefruit sections. …

Linda Rehn is looking for a local restaurant that serves breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches. …

And J. Bodette is looking for reader suggestions for a good haddock or cod fish fry.
