The Cult turning up volume at M Resort

The new Cult record sounds kind of like an old Cult record.

On “Choice of Weapon,” guitars ring and roar, frontman Ian Astbury howls like an Indian shaman/Jim Morrison gene splice and producers Bob Rock and Chris Goss crank everything to 11.

These dudes amped up the bombast on 1989’s “Sonic Temple,” the bedrock upon which “Weapon” was later built.

“Time will never end,” Astbury sings on “This Night in the City Forever,” but the Cult’s latest suggests that he’s found a way to make it stand still, at least.
