Twin Shadow playing Boulevard Pool

The best New Wave was, and still is, posited on contrast, the chilly, detached feel of electronic instruments counterpoised with very human emotional bloodletting.

Twin Shadow, aka George Lewis Jr., sings soulfully, beautifully and with great warmth, over icy synth, ricocheting guitar lines and steely digital drums, his messy emotions the inverse of such a precise musical backdrop.

And so while his repertoire has a distinct ’80s sheen to it in places, it doesn’t feel nostalgic, as Lewis nudges musical touchstones of the past into the future.
