Rio’s Voo Dayclub offers European sunbathing and live music

The Rio's Voo dayclub promises guests uninhibited, exotic fun with no strings attached.

Located in Voodoo Beach, Voo is in its first season. Guests can enjoy European sunbathing, a live DJ and a chill atmosphere, says Jim Laughlin, director of food and beverage for the Rio.

A few years ago, Rio teamed up with an adult club to run Sapphire pool, which was supposed to provide a similar experience using strip club dancers as hostesses. But that didn't work out as Sapphire failed an "integrity check" by Las Vegas police. Rio chose to close the dayclub in 2009.

This time, Voo will be different. The hotel manages the pool, giving the property full control over the goings on there, something it didn't have with Sapphire, Laughlin says.

"We tried to have something adult last year, but it was really a hit or miss," Laughlin says. "We've tried to add more value. We're not Wet Republic or Marquee dayclub; we try to provide something of more value."

Voo is located on a lower level of Voodoo Beach, giving it a secluded feel. On the upper deck, the swimming pools are open to all ages and the atmosphere is more activity-oriented.

The beach's summer concert series starts June 23 and will be open free to the public 21 years and older.

Cabanas are available at Voo and the upper deck pools starting at $150 a day. Prices can go higher depending on the holiday and event, Laughlin says. Daybeds are available for $50, but there are plenty of complimentary chaise lounges throughout.

Voo will feature a rotating lineup of DJs while the upper pools will have their own DJs. On Sunday, Playboy playmate DJ Roxanne Dawn will serve as resident.

Even though the weather has been mild over the past few weeks, the turnout to the pool parties has been good, Laughlin says.

Revenue is up about 20 percent in April and May over last year and Laughlin attributes that to the music. Last season, they piped in music.

"It creates an energy and a vibe we didn't have last year. As soon as you walk out there, you know it's a good time," he says.

The upper pools are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily; Voo is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Cover charge varies. For more information, call 777-6774.
