Tommy Wind blends music with magic

David Copperfield might find it ironic that he inspired the career of the newest -- and youngest -- contender on the Las Vegas magic scene.

Tommy Wind saw Copperfield in Las Vegas at age 9, and "that was when I really got serious about (magic), and really started to love it."

Now 21 and a two-year Las Vegas resident himself, Wind was set to open "Impact" earlier this week in the Wolf Theater at the Clarion.

Wind is billed as a "musical illusionist," and his show "an explosion of magic and music." That's a reference to his guitar playing, but there was no room on the marquee to mention his dancing or martial arts skills as well.

"You can see all of those things melded into a show flow," he says.

A levitating guitar blends his magic and musical skills, and Wind promises some swordplay as well as "a new spin on cutting a person into thirds."

Though his stage is small, Wind promises "a lot of cool original illusions designed from scratch."

"I wanted to save them for Vegas, stuff I didn't want to let out anyplace else. This is our chance to get it going and get our original props and original ideas out there."

As a friend of his texted, "It's a long way from card tricks in the high school lunchroom."
