Center offers classes in English and Spanish

A variety of classes will be offered this summer at East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.

Experienced instructors will guide students willing to try their hand at weaving, drawing or throwing a pot.

They also can learn to sculpt in clay, dance, take private singing lessons, or play guitar or keyboards.

The Arts and Community Events Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will present a six-week class session July 22 through Aug. 30 in a variety of arts disciplines.

Class registration will be open today through Thursday.

The center offers clay and pottery classes, including one that meets the Boy Scout Merit Badge criteria.

The dance curriculum includes ballet folklorico, performing ballet folklorico and flamenco.

Additional classes include computers, Spanish conversation, group and private music lessons, cartooning, drawing and weaving.

Also available are workshops in basket weaving, bookmaking, drum, paper beaded necklaces, tile decorating and clay whistles.

Many of the classes are taught in English and Spanish.

Summer arts camp plans final show

The Arts Conservatory summer arts camp will present a free final show at 5 p.m. July 31 at Reed Whipple Cultural Center.

Participants ages 7 to 15 will showcase what they have learned in art, dance, music and theater during the eight-week experience.

The annual camp, presented by the Arts and Community Events Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, offers children and teens the opportunity to explore a variety of arts activities.

The Reed Whipple Cultural Center is at 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

CSN schedules annual Jazz Combo Camp

Both vocalists and instrumentalists can attend Las Vegas' 11th annual Jazz Combo Camp Monday through July 25 at the College of Southern Nevada's North Las Vegas campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.

The registration fee is $150, which includes tuition, daily lunch and admission to all workshops and performances.

In addition to improv, theory and combo sessions, master classes will be taught by College of Southern Nevada music faculty Chris Davis, bass; Bob Bonora, drums; Gary Queen, guitar; Tom Ferguson, piano; Dick McGee, trombone; Walt Blanton, trumpet; Matt Taylor, saxophone-flute; and Mark Wherry, voice.

The camp concludes with choir and combo performances at 1 p.m. July 25 in the June Whitley Student Lounge on campus.

The finale is free and open to the public.

This year's event marks the retirement of the CSN Jazz Combo Camp's founder Ferguson, who has been with the college since 1988.

During his tenure at the college, Ferguson served as coordinator of music, Performing Arts Department chairman and, most recently, director of jazz studies.

McGee, chairman of the College of Southern Nevada's Department of Fine Arts, notes, "Tom's contributions to the music department and students at CSN have been significant, and he has served the college and the community with distinction."

HENDERSON RECREATION

Arts program aimed at special needs kids

The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department's Therapeutic Recreation Services will host Arts & Crafts For Special Needs from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Aug. 2-30, at Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.

Participation is $38 per child with a parent, with an additional $20 supply fee due to the instructor at class. Respite also is accepted. Register online at cityofhenderson.com, activity number 493015-96. July 30 is the deadline. More information is available at 267-4122.

The class is designed especially for children with autism spectrum disorder and their parents or caregivers. The children socialize with their peers as they work on different creative art projects, including painting, clay, paper crafts, chocolate painting and cake decorating.

Parents also have a chance to talk with other parents to share experiences and lend support.
