Local artist helps with ABC 'Extreme Makeover'
The work of Las Vegas artist Michael Thieme, who designs under the name Mikel Patrik, is hanging in the home of a Utah family who received a new house courtesy of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."
Patrik's art was included in the new home for the Gomez family, whose young son has a rare blood disorder.
Patrik said he worked with show designers and producers to modify eight of his original paintings to coordinate with the new home in Utah. The pieces were electronically transferred to a print shop, where they were printed on canvas before being installed in the home.
Patrik's work with the show will be featured during Sunday's episode. "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" airs at 8 p.m. on ABC.
Interior Design Society plans to create Designer Showhouse
The Las Vegas Chapter of the Interior Design Society has announced that plans are under way to create a Designer Showhouse.
Kimberly McDonald, president, said negotiations are under way with community partners and the house is expected to be completed by mid-October 2012.
Cary Vogel and Lance Robins of Interiors by Cary Vogel are serving as co-chairs of the showhouse project.
Interested professional interior designers and affiliate members who wish to participate in the project must become official members of the Interior Design Society by Oct. 7, 2011. A membership application is available on the national organization's website, www.interiordesignsociety.org.
A lottery will be held to select the final participants from the list of interested candidates, McDonald said.
Participating designers will be expected to attend regular meetings on Saturday mornings to keep the committee updated on their progress.
In addition to designers working on the showhouse itself, the society needs members to assist with other committees related to the project .

Local 4-H program to demonstrate wind energy
Youth in Clark County participating in the 4-H program will join thousands of young people across the nation Wednesday to become scientists for the day during the fourth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day. Local youth will demonstrate wind energy technologies at 3:30 p.m. at the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St., North Las Vegas.
As part of the festivities, youth will participate in Wired for Wind: the 2011 National Science Experiment that will demonstrate how young people can implement alternatives to traditional energy production and have a positive impact on their communities and ecosystems.
The event aims to promote science college majors and occupations, and enhance the nation's contribution to the sciences. 4-H National Youth Science Day demonstrates that science, engineering, math and technology are fun and attainable options for college degrees and future careers.
Currently, more than 5 million young people across the nation participate in 4-H science, engineering, technology and applied math year-long programming .

'Design Star' finalist to teach home staging workshop
Cathy Hobbs, who was a finalist on HGTV's "Design Star" competition, will present a home staging certification course Oct. 8-10 at Treasure Island.
The workshop is an intensive and comprehensive hands-on program for decorators, designers, organizers and real estate agents to learn the art of staging.
Hobbs is a five-time Emmy Award- winning television personality and creator of Design Recipes, a resource guide providing step-by-step instruction on how a room was created and executed so that do-it-yourselfers can recreate the look.
The three-day session costs $2,199, including certification.
