Cooperative Extension, Rose Society will meet Sept. 26

Clark County Cooperative Extension and the South Valley Rose Society are collaborating and offering educational meetings throughout the fall. They are free and open to the public.

The first meeting will be held Sept. 26 and focus on gardening benefits for roses. Angela O’Callaghan, a social horticulturist specialist, will discuss how to create and maintain a rose garden using organic gardening practices.

The session, as with all in the series, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

Master gardeners to offer free classes at Acacia Park

For the ninth year, local master gardeners will offer a series of free classes at Acacia Park during the fall. The classes are offered in partnership with the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and will be taught by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension master gardeners.

The fall line-up is:

Sept. 21: Fall Veggies for a Winter Garden. This will focus on the nuts and bolts of successful vegetable gardening. Topics will include what will grow in the Las Vegas Valley, when to plant, when to fertilize and varieties that seem to do well.

Oct. 5: Everything is Coming Up Roses. A local rosarian will co-present the class that will offer tips to make roses a part of your landscape.

Oct. 26: Trick or Treats. Master gardeners will introduce children to festive plant projects as Halloween approaches. All children — young and young at heart — are invited to attend. Early registration is recommended, since space fills quickly.

Nov. 9: Gardening with Physical Limitations. Gardening is a healthy habit for all ages, but sometimes a physical condition can affect one’s ability to enjoy gardening. Learn strategies for modifying clothing and equipment, and techniques to prevent injury to you and your garden. Those attending are asked to bring their favorite gardening implement.

Nov. 23: Growing and Using. Participants will learn all about herbs, including those that can be grown indoors or as landscape plants. How to use herbs in soups and salad, as decorations in your home or as gifts for the holidays also will be discussed.

Advance registration for all sessions is requested and can be done by visiting www.cityofhenderson.com/parks and clicking online registration.

All sessions will begin at 9 a.m. at the park, 50 Casa Del Fuego.

On class days, the master gardeners will staff an “Ask a Master Gardener” table at the park.

For additional information or to have gardening questions answered, call the help line at 702-257-5587 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Fun, information to highlight Solarbration Solar Festival

All are invited to save the date for the Conservation District of Southern Nevada’s second annual Solarbration Solar Festival. It will be held Oct. 5 at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

The purpose of the festival is to blend art, technology and an outreach effort to promote renewable energy, inspire conservation and support sustainable communities.

The festival will feature solar-powered art, live music, food and more. Additionally, there will be solar demonstrations and information about sustainable energy.

“We promise to deliver a fun-filled family event that will be a one-stop location for everything related to going solar,” said Jon Wardlaw, commission chairman of the Conservation District of Southern Nevada. “We will have all the latest information regarding energy rebates, tax credits, solar financing and lots of hands-on activities for all ages.”

There will be more than 35 vendors in the Solar Village.

Admission to the festival is free.
