Hooker gets into shoe business

If you’re tired of tripping over your shoes when you step groggily into your closet in the mornings, a new kind of furniture may provide welcome relief.

In a move to stop shoe clutter, Hooker Furniture is introducing a new breed of furniture: a shoe cupboard. The slim and compact cupboards will fit in most any room in the house, and with seven shelves, should easily store 20 or more pairs of shoes.

The cupboard debuted last month at the High Point Market, an international home furnishings show held twice a year in High Point, N.C.

The 30 1/2-inch-wide-by-12- 3/4-inch-deep cupboards are 85 inches high and have a full-length door and mirror. They feature seven shelves, which can be positioned two ways: angled for shoes or flat with the lip on the front of the shelf for storing other items in addition to shoes.

The cupboards are as attractive as they are functional. One style offered is Hooker’s top-selling Waverly Place, a sophisticated European country style with antique cherry finish. The other style offers a mirrored front with reverse-painted glass in a distinctive honeycomb pattern.
