HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: A moderate 3-mile hike is scheduled for Monday. The hike goes to Cathedral Rock, located at Mount Charleston. Tuesday, there will be a 3.5-mile moderate Arnight Knoll hike to see a variety of plant life. Friday, there will be a 3-mile moderate hike along the southern edge of Calico Hills for an up close view of the formations. Also on Friday, a moderate 2.5-mile hike to see forces of erosion. On Saturday, an easy 1-mile hike in Ash Creek (515-5367).
Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's Web site: www.aroundthebendfriends.com
BIKES
Red Rock Canyon: There will be an introductory mountain bike ride starting from the late night parking lot. The 6-mile single-track ride is for beginners and intermediate riders. Helmets are required 6375 (515-5367).
OTHER PROGRAMS
Archaeo-Nevada Society: Charlie Deitrich, history professor at College Southern Nevada, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at College of Southern Nevada, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd., on the history of Nevada. Also, the society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
Hoover Dam Outback Tour: Saturday, historian Kurt Schweigert and Bureau of Reclamation archaeologists Renee Kilvet and Pat Hicks will lead a tour down the portol road to spoil piles, original electric switchyards and the World War II pill box. The Bureau of Reclamation will provide transportation to these restricted areas, but the tour is limited to 30 participants. Bring your own lunch.
