R-JENERATION: Getting to know this year’s team

It's Thursday. The weekend is just on the horizon. But for some teens, it means heading to the Las Vegas Review-Journal for an R-Jeneration meeting.

R-Jeneration, known as R-Jen, is a program at the Review-Journal where high school students are taught journalism from R-J staff mentors. The students' work is published in the Sunday newspaper and is posted online. Also, two seniors each year are recognized for their outstanding efforts, and each receives a $2,000 scholarship.

Now in its 11th year, the program has about two dozen students. Among them:

Flo Awuah, senior, Las Vegas Academy

Lived in Africa for four years and volunteers at homeless shelters and as an art instructor for children with disabilities. She hopes to become a performer traveling around the world, bringing peace and love through music and art.

Catelyn Bowers, junior, Green Valley

Enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, shopping and dancing. She likes to watch the "Back to the Future" movies and wants to be a journalist.

Kailyn Brown, senior, Legacy

Likes learning about different cultures through books like "The Dowry Bride." She wants to become an entertainment journalist in a big city such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York or Washington, D.C.

Allison Cox, senior, Palo Verde

Enjoys helping people build confidence through their clothes. She wants to become a fashion stylist and plans to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising upon graduation.

Jordan Cunanan, sophomore, Basic

Enjoys writing and taking pictures. She would like to become a dentist, architect, photographer or journalist and describes herself as genuine.

Railey Deang, senior, Green Valley

Plays the electric guitar and describes herself as phantasmagoric. She dreams of working either at Vogue or Rolling Stone.

Dylan Domingo, senior, Green Valley

Dreams of being involved in the music business. He likes to read the entertainment section of the R-J and looks forward to contributing to R-Jen.

Sean Elezra, senior, Green Valley

Likes to catch up on TV shows (via TiVo) in his free time. He would like to be involved in the media, whether it is print or online journalism.

Jennifer Jeong, junior, Coronado

Describes herself as optimistic. She would like to be a teacher or reporter and enjoys reading books, such as "The Help," and playing the cello.

Laekyn Kelley, junior, Coronado

Enjoys going to concerts with friends and going to new places. She would like to do something in journalism in the future.

Katherine Knott, senior, Faith Lutheran

Enjoys riding horses and reading "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." She is editor-in-chief at the school newspaper.

Joshua Liebowitz, senior, Basic

Dreams of becoming a journalist and a pro bowler. He likes history and English, enjoys bowling, singing and writing music.

Briceyda Lopez, junior, Las Vegas Academy

Self-described as spontaneous and likes to hang out with friends. She has been dancing for 13 years and has done all kinds of dance from ballet to tap.

Michael MacDougall, senior, Advanced Technologies Academy

Describes himself as quirky, likes to play the drums and is a DJ. He would like to become a lawyer and spent the summer in Singapore.

Caolinn Mejza, junior, Las Vegas Academy

Enjoys classical music and has played the violin her entire life. She loves to travel and ski and snowboard during the winter and would like to become a lawyer.

Chyanna Miller, senior, Las Vegas Academy

Plays the piano, guitar, bass clarinet and likes to dabble with the French horn. She has been in the Honor Band of America, likes to fist pump in the car and enjoys "Titanic" and "Zoolander."

Claudia Peck, senior, Las Vegas Academy

Enjoys reading the comics section of the paper and eating snickerdoodle cookies. She attends local music and art gatherings.

Haley Prater, junior, Palo Verde

Loves watching movies and her favorite subject is AP statistics. She enjoys traveling and hopes to be an investigative journalist.

Paolo Sardinas, junior, Coronado

Enjoys watching movies such as "Chinatown," as well as writing reviews online. He would like to become a journalist or a film director in the future.

Yujin Seo, sophomore, Green Valley

Has a dream to become a lawyer and loves to read books by Mitch Albom. She enjoys scrapbooking, running and forensics and journalism classes in school.

Ellie Smith, sophomore, home-schooled

Loves "Footloose" and performs the national anthem at various sporting events, including Lakers, Bears and Dodgers games. She has been singing since age 6.

Stacie Vance, senior, Legacy

Aspires to be a political journalist. She enjoys traveling, hanging out with friends, reading and writing.

Tommy Ward, senior, Faith Lutheran

Describes himself as obnoxious. He would like to be in the entertainment industry as a singer, actor and/or musician, and enjoys learning about science.

Corey Wogalter, junior, Coronado

Would like to become a writer for Rolling Stone magazine or a lawyer. He enjoys "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and his dog, Jackson.

Britton York, junior, Coronado

Enjoys social studies, which is his favorite subject. He joined R-Jen because he wants to learn about journalism from an inside perspective.
