Stay buoyant at salty Mono Lake

Just east of the Sierra Nevada range, near the small tourist town of Lee Vining, Calif., is one of the most unusual bodies of water you’ll ever visit. Mono Lake is one of the oldest in North America and has no outlet, and for that reason, mineral salts have become so concentrated in the lake that fish cannot live in it. These high concentrations combined with other local conditions to form towers of rock tufa, extending high above the water surface and are equally beloved by birds and photographers.

Maybe it was too far away; maybe my schedule was too busy. Probably it was the fact that my golf swing is already close to perfect. Whatever, it’s been quite a while since I’ve been to the Callaway Golf Experience on Las Vegas Boulevard South. A lot has transpired. It’s now the TaylorMade Golf Experience. In November 2013, the owners and brothers, John and Ron Boreta, didn’t renew their agreement with Callaway Golf, which cleared the way for the relationship with TaylorMade.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation reports that 74 percent of U.S. gun retailers saw an increase in female patrons from 2011 to 2012, with women making up 20 percent of sales. Since 2005, female gun ownership in America has doubled in the $8 billion industry. In contrast, a General Social Survey shows that the number of Americans who live in a household with at least one gun is lower than it’s ever been, with 32 percent either owning a firearm themselves or living with someone who does. In the late 1970s and early ’80s, roughly half of Americans told researchers there was a gun in their household.

East side pools and water parks offer plenty of cool options

Editor’s note: On May 20, the city of Las Vegas said it had completed additional testing on its six pools and found no evidence of staph or MRSA bacteria. According to the city, it tests the water in its pools a minimum of twice a day and normally many more times than that to ensure the safety of its patrons.

Lincoln County, our nearest neighboring county to the north, is rich in sites where you can see unspoiled petroglyphs, the mysterious rock carvings that have graced cliffs and boulders since prehistoric times. Two of my favorite sites in that area are the White River Narrows Archaeological District and the Mt. Irish Rock Art and Archaeological District, both located off of state Route 318, north of Alamo and Hiko.

Parkdale recreation center reopens with twice as much space

The Parkdale Recreation & Senior Center, 3200 Ferndale St., had its grand reopening March 31. The 11,667-square-foot recreation center stands on the same property that has been used for community recreation for more than 60 years.
