1 dead in crash involving Las Vegas police patrol vehicle

Updated September 20, 2017 - 7:40 am

One person died after rear-ending a Las Vegas police patrol car early Wednesday in the south valley.

He died at the scene about 3:30 a.m. near Las Vegas Boulevard South and Serene Avenue, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. David Gordon said.

In a statement, Metro said that because the crash involved a Metro officer and a civilian’s death, the Henderson Police Department would investigate the crash.

A white Chevrolet Impala rear-ended the Metro Ford Explorer in the southbound lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard at Serene, Henderson police spokesman Scott Williams said. He said the officer was waiting at the light before the crash.

The driver died at the scene. The Clark County coroner’s office will identify him once his family is notified.

The Metro officer’s injuries were survivable, Metro said.

The intersection was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
