Boyfriend arrested in woman’s shooting death near downtown Las Vegas

Las Vegas police have arrested a man in connection with his girlfriend's Wednesday night shooting death.

Johnny Medrano, 24, faces one count each of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to a Metro release Thursday.

Police say Medrano and his girlfriend were in an argument about 11 p.m. when he shot her at their apartment near the intersection of 21st and Fremont streets, the release said.

Someone in a nearby apartment who heard the gunfire alerted police, and officers went to check it out. Responders then found the woman, who was pronounced dead at the apartment.

About 15 minutes earlier, call logs show police responded at 11:45 p.m. to the same address, 50 N. 21st St., for a family disturbance. Metro officer Michael Rodriguez said the two calls are not necessarily related.

Medrano was found at a nearby home and arrested without incident.

This is the 81st homicide in 2015 in Metro's jurisdiction this year.

The Clark County coroner's office will release the identity of the dead woman once next-of-kin has been notified.
