County OKs $11 million UMC raises

Clark County commissioners on Tuesday approved a contract for University Medical Center employees who are represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 1107.

The three-year contract’s costs will increase by nearly $11 million. That figure, the combined total for all years, is a 4.4 percent increase in the contract’s costs.

The unanimous vote came after an arbitrator found that the county cannot eliminate longevity pay for future staff at the public hospital. Longevity pay adds 0.57 percent to the annual base salaries of employees for each year of service after they have completed eight years of service.

The agreement includes a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment retroactive to Jan. 1 that restores a 2 percent pay cut employees took in 2011. Employees also will receive a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment retroactive to July 1 and a 1.5 percent cost-of-living increase effective July 1, 2015.

The union represents about 3,000 employees at UMC.

The case went to arbitration after commissioners in February were unable to pass a tentative agreement that would have preserved longevity pay for new employees.
