Dining Pick of the Week: Hometown Classic American Eats

65 W. Lake Mead Parkway at South Water Street, 405-0820

Rex Henriott's comfortable restaurant shines with a menu where every item can be described as being true American comfort food. How else do you describe classics such as pot roast, French dip, home-style meatloaf topped with mashed potatoes, Southwestern beef brisket and Thanksgiving turkey with mashed potatoes, dressing and cranberry relish? Among the sandwiches are roast chicken, hand-carved turkey, traditional club, honey baked ham and egg, tuna or chicken salad. There are also hot dogs and hamburgers. Two supper items are the daily Blue Plate Special and South of the Border Special (carnitas tacos and Spanish rice). There are soups (chicken noodle, chili) and salads (Cobb and chicken barbecue ranch). Breakfast is available throughout the day with omelets, French toast, pancakes with sausage or bacon, biscuits and gravy and chicken fried steak with eggs. Nothing is more American than dessert, meaning cake or pie with vanilla ice cream. The kids' menu features baked macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese and a hot dog with fries and a drink. Breakfast begins at $2.99, and hot classics are $6.49. Hometown is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. - Jack Bulavsky
