Tony Illia of Las Vegas has been awarded an honorable mention in the 2010 ASCE Excellence in Journalism Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers for his series of stories on the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge near Hoover Dam that ran in the Boulder City Review on Oct. 14, 2010.

The award is given for outstanding coverage enhancing public understanding of the role and impact of civil engineering in designing solutions for transportation, the environment and other public works projects.

Joselyn Cousins of Las Vegas has been named vice president of community development for the United Way of Southern Nevada.

Dolores Hauck and Matt Hirsch were promoted to senior directors of community development.

Mike Ndosi has been hired as a junior designer by ToeShark Visual Communications LLC, a visual communication design firm.

Ndosi is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

A citizen of Tanzania, East Africa, he also is an international student at The Art Institute of Las Vegas and is pursuing a degree in graphic design.

Anthony and Leanne Cervantes of Las Vegas have welcomed Yannik Lukas Fenkes, an exchange student from Germany, for the 2011 academic year.

Yannik is attending Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School through the Youth For Understanding USA student exchange program.

Sharon Chadwick, a theater teacher at Liberty High School, has been awarded the Myra Greenspun Teacher Excellence Award by The Public Education Foundation.

The award recognizes an exemplary public school teacher who is successful in using innovative teaching strategies and raising student academic achievement.

Chadwick is a member of the Educational Theatre Association and is the Nevada Thespian Chapter director coordinating statewide theater events for middle and high schools. She was named the 2003 and 2011 Nevada Thespian Theatre Teacher of the Year.

The award comes with $3,000 for Chadwick to use in her classroom and a $1,000 honorarium for herself.

Darylann Carter and Virginia Finnegan, both of Henderson, represented Southern Hills Republican Women and Nevada Federated Republic at the Republican Women's Convention in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 2. The women were among 1,200 leaders representing 47 states and Puerto Rico.

The convention featured Republican presidential candidates speakers Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santor um.

Camille Duskin, Monique Harris and Candace Nichols have received Bank of America Excellence Awards.

A ceremony honored the women for inspiring others and championing causes vital to the community.

Each woman's efforts are focused on a different area including arts, education, community service, mentoring, social services and youth development.

Duskin helps the visual and performing arts community by providing affordable cultural performances.

Harris, a social worker for more than 10 years, founded Southern Nevada Children First, a nonprofit organization created to mentor, educate and train homeless, pregnant and parenting youths and young adults.

Nichols has been a community activist and professional in the nonprofit sector in Nevada for more than 20 years, working with myriad vulnerable populations, including HIV-positive youths and the homeless.
