I-15 to be shut down for Fifth Street bridge work

Interstate 15 commuters beware: Overnight traveling on the freeway in North Las Vegas will not be pleasurable for the next couple of weeks. Chaos is typically the result of a complete closure of the state's busiest freeway.

Starting Monday night at 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday, I-15 north will be closed between Lake Mead Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue. That overnight closure schedule will continue until Thursday morning. The same closure will occur next week between Monday night and Thursday morning.

The freeway will remain open during daytime hours.

Crews are shutting down the freeway to build the North Fifth Street bridge overpass across the interstate.

Traffic on northbound I-15 will be detoured off the freeway at Lake Mead, where motorists will turn left. Traffic then will turn right onto Losee Road and right onto Cheyenne, where it will be allowed to proceed north on the freeway.

The overpass is part of a $130 million project that will create a new artery linking Interstate 215 in the north and downtown North Las Vegas.

The first phase, which is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2013, creates an eight-lane road between Owens and Carey avenues. That new stretch will include trails, landscaped medians and dedicated bus lanes. Part two of the project will include an overpass over Losee Road; that portion is scheduled to be finished in 2015.

The Regional Transportation Commission's Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation will adjust traffic signals on the detour roads to ensure that traffic flows smoothly.

Funding for the project was provided to the city by the Regional Transportation Commission and the Federal Highway Administration.
