A family friend accused of kidnapping a 5-year-old boy in North Las Vegas this week has been released from custody.
Shaquille Pierce, 22, was released after a North Las Vegas police investigation, which lasted into the early-morning hours Friday but did not produce enough evidence to keep the man in custody.
Police have said Pierce disappeared with the boy, Amari Connor, about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when the pair walked away from the boy’s home near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue.
Amari was located at Sam’s Town with Pierce about 6:20 p.m. Thursday. The boy was unharmed, but hospital staff checked him out as a precaution.
North Las Vegas police spokeswoman Ann Cavaricci said the investigation is ongoing, and detectives still plan on submitting criminal charges against Pierce. She said investigators needed more time to interview witnesses.
“It’s not over,” she said. “There’s lots of evidence to gather.”
Red Rock Search and Rescue, the Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI were involved in the search for Amari. Authorities contacted Sam’s Town while pursuing an investigative lead, and the hotel worked with them to find the boy.
Pierce had permission to take the child with him Wednesday afternoon.
