Man killed in Monday scooter crash identified

The man who died when a scooter and an ambulance collided where Boulder Highway becomes Fremont Street on Monday has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.

He is Michael Ortiz, 50, of Las Vegas, the coroner said Tuesday.

Ortiz died after a scooter the scooter he was driving hit the MedicWest ambulance at Boulder Highway/Fremont and Sahara Avenue, Las Vegas police said.

The ambulance was responding to a call with its sirens and lights on. All other traffic had stopped for the ambulance, police said.

A 49-year-old woman riding with Ortiz was injured. She was in critical but stable condition, police said Monday. An updated condition was not available Tuesday.

Ortiz was pronounced died at the scene.
