Metro: Driver of pickup that hit teen, left in custody

Las Vegas police have identified the man they say left a 14-year-old girl in the street with substantial injuries after striking her with his car Thursday morning.

Las Vegan Steve Chavez, 28, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. He faces charges of felony hit-and-run.

Officers were called about 8 a.m. to 751 Hacienda Ave., near Topaz Street, Metro spokeswoman officer Laura Meltzer said. Witness statements indicate the girl was crossing Hacienda Avenue in an unmarked crosswalk when she was struck by Chavez’s pickup truck, which was headed east.

Chavez failed to stop and remain at the scene, police say.

He was apprehended after police located the 2001 Nissan Frontier believed to be involved in the crash. Police called the registered owner of the truck, a woman who said her son, Chavez, had been using it.

The teen was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with serious injuries but was expected to survive.
